The Origins of Insurance in Livonia, NY
The roots of the agency trace back to 1859, when Dr. Andrew Sill of Livonia secured an agent agreement with Hartford Fire Insurance Company. At a time when insurance was still developing as a formal industry, Dr. Sill provided fire insurance protection to local residents as a part-time service to the community. His efforts marked the beginning of a legacy that would evolve through multiple generations of leadership. This early foundation established the agency’s long-standing relationship with trusted carriers and set the tone for a business focused on responsibility and service.
Franklin B. Francis and Early Community Leadership
After Dr. Sill, the insurance business passed to Franklin B. Francis, who balanced insurance work with careers in education and public service. Francis taught mathematics and natural science at Temple Hill Academy in Geneseo and later became a school commissioner for Northern Livingston County. His involvement in both education and insurance reflected a strong commitment to community development. By continuing the insurance operation alongside his civic duties, Francis ensured that protection and guidance remained available to local families and businesses during a period of growth and transition.
Transition Through the Banking Era
The agency later transferred to Will Thurston, owner and operator of the Woodruff and Thurston Bank. When the bank failed in 1918, the insurance business was preserved through Charles H. Carey, a cashier at the bank who assumed responsibility for the agency. Carey relocated the operation to the Boynton Grocery Block on Commercial Street and later moved it to the town office when he became town clerk. These transitions reflected resilience and continuity during uncertain economic times, allowing the agency to remain a stable presence in the community.
Philip J. Sweeney and Professional Expansion
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Philip J. Sweeney began his full-time career in insurance after teaching school and selling life insurance part-time. Sweeney became an agent for Royal Globe Insurance Company and eventually took over the Carey business around 1940. Under his leadership, the agency became firmly established on High Street in Livonia. During World War II, while Sweeney served in the Coast Guard, his brother Maurice operated the agency, ensuring uninterrupted service to clients.
A Pioneer in Insurance Education
Philip J. Sweeney distinguished himself as one of the first agents in the region to earn both the Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1935 and the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation in 1955. At a time when professional designations were uncommon, his dedication to education elevated the agency’s reputation among insurance carriers and clients alike. This commitment to knowledge laid the groundwork for the agency’s long-standing emphasis on professionalism and informed service.
Growth and Relocation on Main Street
In 1963, Sweeney relocated the agency from High Street to the Wingate Electric Shop on Main Street, where it continues to operate today. This move symbolized both growth and permanence within the Livonia business district. The agency expanded its services while maintaining its community focus, serving as a familiar and trusted local institution for residents seeking insurance protection and guidance.
John Chanler and the Modern Agency Era
In 1968, John Chanler joined the agency as a sales producer. Upon Sweeney’s retirement in 1973, John purchased the agency and continued operating under the Sweeney name until 1980, when it became the John W. Chanler Agency, Inc. His leadership marked a transition into a more modern business structure while preserving the values and relationships built over decades. This period strengthened the agency’s identity and prepared it for future expansion.
Expansion into Geneseo
In 1981, a second office opened in Geneseo at 73 Main Street. As the agency grew, more space was required, leading to a relocation in 1991 to the former Ford garage building at 57 Main Street. These expansions reflected increasing demand for insurance services and a broader regional presence. The agency continued to evolve while maintaining close ties to the communities it served.
Andrew Chanler and Continued Legacy
In November 2002, Andrew Chanler purchased the agency as his father prepared for retirement. At that time, the corporate name was shortened to Chanler Agency, Inc. In January 2005, the Geneseo office moved to a newly acquired building at 128 Main Street. These changes represented a new generation of leadership and a renewed commitment to long-term service, ensuring that the agency remained rooted in tradition while adapting to modern insurance needs.
A Tradition That Continues Today
The original contract with Hartford Fire Insurance Company, established in 1859, remains in force today, symbolizing one of the longest continuous carrier relationships in the region. This enduring partnership reflects stability, trust, and dedication to quality service. Chanler Agency remains committed to preserving the spirit of small business in the community while continuing to protect individuals and businesses for decades to come. The agency’s history, researched by Maurice Sweeney and documented by John Chanler, stands as a testament to resilience, education, and community service.
